You’ll typically lose 2 years of No Claims Discount (NCD) for each fault claim. Non-fault claims usually don’t affect your NCD if the costs are recovered from the third-party.
If you have NCD Protection, you can keep your discount after 1 or 2 fault claims in a year. Windscreen claims don’t impact your NCD, and any claims older than five years won’t need to be declared.
What is a No Claims Discount?
Your No Claims Discount (also known as NCD or No Claims Bonus) is a discount you earn for each year you don’t make a claim. It helps lower the cost of your insurance over time. Find out more on what is a No Claims Discount.
When is your NCD affected?
- If your claim is classed as fault (we pay out and don’t recover the cost), your NCD may be reduced.
- If your claim is classed as non-fault, your NCD usually remains unaffected — as long as we recover all costs from the other party.
What happens to my NCD after a fault claim?
If you have a fault claim, your NCD will typically be reduced by 2 years. If you have only built up 1 or 2 years of NCD, you’ll lose it completely.
If you make multiple fault claims, you’ll lose 2 years for each claim.
Good to know: If a claim is still open or under investigation, it’s treated as a fault claim until proven otherwise.
What if I have NCD Protection?
If you’ve added NCD Protection to your policy, you can usually:
- Keep your NCD after 1 or 2 fault claims in a year
- Still lose it if you make 3 or more fault claims in a single year
You must have at least 1 year of UK NCD to be eligible for this add-on.
Do windscreen claims affect my NCD?
No. Windscreen-only claims don’t impact your No Claims Discount.
Will my NCD be affected forever?
No. Claims are considered for five years and must be declared during that period. Once they’re older than five years, they won’t impact your NCD or need to be declared to new insurers.
