How do I cancel my home insurance policy?
To cancel your policy, start a Live Chat with our team via the app or on our Help page.
Our team is available every day and would love the chance to help before you go. We'll talk through your options and make sure you're happy with your decision before making any changes.
Things to consider before you cancel
Before you cancel, there are a couple of things worth keeping in mind:
- Cancellation time. Your cover will remain active until 23:59 on the day you choose to cancel.
- Mortgage requirements. If you have a mortgage, your lender will usually require buildings insurance to be in place. Make sure you have alternative cover arranged before cancelling.
How much does it cost to cancel?
Your cancellation fee depends on when you cancel:
- Within 14 days of starting your policy (your cooling-off period): £25 admin fee.
- After 14 days of starting your policy: £50 cancellation charge.
- If Marshmallow cancels your policy (for example, due to unpaid documents or non-payment): £75 cancellation fee.
The cooling-off period is the 14 days after your policy starts, during which you can cancel for a reduced fee.
When will I get my refund?
If you haven't made a claim, your refund will be calculated pro-rata, based on the time left on your policy. The cancellation fee will be deducted from your refund.
- Refunds are paid to the card on your account.
- It can take 5-10 working days for the refund to appear.
If you have made a claim during your policy year, you won't be entitled to a refund for the remaining time on your policy.
